Supervising Archivist for Records Management and Acquisitions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Develops, plans, coordinates, implements, and documents
all aspects of the records management program for government records in all
formats in Massachusetts.  This program includes development of policies and
standards; outreach, training, and public relations activities; surveys,
scheduling, and consultations; supervision of the Records Management Unit.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans records management program for the state
in consultation with the Archivist of the Commonwealth, the Supervisor of
Public Records, and the Curator of the Archives. Develops tools and policies
for the management of government records. Reviews, analyzes, and revises
standards, policies, and methods used by the Archives Division to carry out
records management and acquisitions activities. Supervises staff of the
Records Management Unit and Records Conservation Board.  Oversees appraisal
of records and administers transfer of records to the Archives. Assists in
the reappraisal of records already held by the Archives.        Plans and
recommends legislative initiatives relating to records management.

QUALIFICATIONS: Masters in archival administration and/or records
management, information science, political science, public administration,
history, or an allied field and five years professional work experience in
archives/records management or an equivalent combination of education and
experience. Thorough knowledge of records management theory and practice,
including that applicable to electronic records.  Thorough knowledge of
archival practice, particularly as it relates to identifying and appraising
archival records.  Experience in a public records environment highly
desirable.  Working knowledge of Massachusetts history, contemporary state
administration, and relevant law and regulations at all jurisdictional
levels desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Ability to identify and analyze state records needs,
construct responsive program initiatives, and implement activities. Ability
to apply conventional standards and methods and to test, revise, and
implement improved standards and methods. Ability to supervise staff, define
tasks, make assignments, and evaluate follow-through of records management
staff. Superior oral and written communications skills including formal
presentations. Good computer skills including familiarity with standard
software products.  Ability to work collegially and to set own goals.

SALARY:  Negotiable depending on qualifications.
