About the Indiana Historical Society
The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) seeks
candidates for the full-time
position of Visual Collections Archivist in the
Visual Collections
Department of the Library Division (the William
Henry Smith Library).
Founded in 1830 and located in Indianapolis, IHS
is a private,
independent, nonprofit membership organization
dedicated to collecting,
preserving, and promoting Indiana's history.   The
Library actively
collects materials on the history of Indiana and
the Old Northwest.

About the position
The Visual Collections Archivist is responsible
for assisting the
Curator of Visual Collections in the acquisition,
preservation,
arrangement, description, cataloging, and use of
visual material.
Duties include processing collections and writing
collection guides,
creating item-level records for scanned images
from visual collections
in the library's online catalog, and assisting
with reference duties as
assigned.  A complete job description is available
upon request.

Essential knowledge, abilities, and skills
Candidates should know archival theories and their
practical application
for large and small collections as well as the
history of photography
and historical photographic processes.   Essential
knowledge also
includes cataloging procedures and working
knowledge of automated
library cataloging software (Voyager preferred).
Candidates should have
experience with scanning photographs and negatives
and proficiency with
Word and HTML.  Must have manual dexterity
necessary to handle fragile
collection materials.  The ability to communicate
effectively with staff
and researchers is a must as is the ability to
write clearly, concisely,
and accurately.  Familiarity with American and
Indiana history a plus.

Qualifications

Required:   A master's degree in archival
administration, or a master's
degree in library science, museum studies,
history, or another related
humanities field with an emphasis on archival
administration. Three to
five years experience working with visual material
in an archival
(provenance-based) manner in an archives, library,
or museum.

Pay and benefits
The salary range for this position starts in the
low-$30's; pay offered
will be commensurate with experience and skills.

Parking is provided in a nearby garage for a
one-time $11 fee.
