June NYC ART Meeting: Nicholson Baker and Preservation

JUNE 2001 ARCHIVISTS ROUND TABLE OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK MEETING NOTICE

EVERYONE WELCOME: PLEASE PLAN ON JOINING US FOR THIS LIVELY DISCUSSION!

DOUBLE FOLD, TRIPLE TROUBLE?

Nicholson Baker's controversial new book has infuriated some, inspired others, and kindled an important national debate concerning preservation, technology, and library funding. "Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper" (New York: Random House, 2001), almost immediately directed unprecedented journalistic attention at library and archival practices, received laudatory reviews in popular media outlets, generated lively listserv commentary, and provoked diverse responses from within our various professional communities. This panel will discuss, dissect, and debate Baker's evidence, conclusions, and perspective. It will also consider the broader implications that librarians, preservationists, and archivists can take from the discussion.

DR. PETER J. WOSH, Director of the Program in Archival Management and Historical Editing at New York University and the author of numerous books and articles concerning historical and archival topics, will moderate this distinguished professional panel.

Participants include: DR. BARBRA BUCKNER HIGGINBOTHAM, Chief Librarian and Executive Director of Academic Information Technologies at Brooklyn College, who has authored several books concerning preservation and access and currently serves on the Council of the American Library Association; Dr. JANET GERTZ, Director for Preservation for Columbia University Libraries, who has served as Chair of the Preservation and Reformatting Section of the American Library Association, and who has written and spoken on many aspects of preservation, including microfilming, digitization and audio preservation; and ROBERT SINK, who has served as Archivist/Records Manager at New York Public Library since 1985 in addition to being an active archival educator, author, and Fellow of the Society of American Archivists.

Join us for a lively, provocative, and fun evening. Bring your archival attitude and prepare to participate in an important discussion.
