Re: Finding 19th Century Illustrations

Working at a music archive my mind naturally leaps to the beautifully illustrated sheet music I've seen.  Here are a few
  references (in no particular order):

"Old sheet music: a pictorial history" by Marian Klamkin. NY:  Hawthorn Books, Inc., 1975.

"Victorian sheet music covers" by Edwin H. Prout.  Detroit:  Gale Researcher Company, 1972.

"American sheet music with prices: a guide to collecting sheet music from 1775 to 1975" by Daniel B. Priest.  Des Moines:
  Wallace-Homestead Books,  1978.

"Some girls do and some girls don't:  sheet music covers"  by Tony Locantro.  London:  Quartet Books, 1985.

"Picture the songs: lithographs from the sheet music of nineteenth century American" by Lester S. Levy.  Baltimore:  John
  Hopkins University Press, 1976.

Good Morning.

I don't know if such a thing exists, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a general subject index of illustrations in ante-bellum to mid-19th Century magazines.  I know that Harpers Magazine gives a list of illustrations at the beginning of each volume in the 1850s.  If not, does anyone have any tips about locating such items? Also, am I correct in assuming that all such illustrations are in the public domain?

Please reply directly to me, with a copy to the list if you wish, as I only get the digest.
