Folder labels: Summary of responses

Greetings all,

Thanks to those who replied both on- and off-list to
my query last week concerning the advisability of
using adhesive labels on folders when processing.

While only four responded, the answers covered the
whole range:

1. Use monet metal staples to shore up existing loose
labels.

2. Use Hollinger labels, which have held up very well
so far for ten years at the respondent's institution.
(She also liked the older type of label which folded
over the tab, remaining draped in place even if it
dried out. That type does not seem to be available any
longer however.)

3. Use an ink stamp with movable characters, though
respondent questioned possible problem with ink
migration.

4. Use only soft-leaded pencil.

So.....my vote, FWIW, is #4 despite the time it will
consume. The full-cut of the folder can be utilized
for information (labels limit space for such), and it
is reversible yet reasonably long-lasting. Considering
that labels require time for data entry, sheet feeding
and attaching, I'm not even convinced it is more
cost-effective than hand-writing in pencil. And, there
is the risk of using a bad batch of labels that dries
out prematurely.

Again, thanks to those who responded.
