The floods unleashed by remnants of Tropical Storm Allison over the weekend
are being blamed for the deaths of 21 people as well as an estimated $1
billion in visible property damage.
To help Houston and Baton Rouge-area flood victims and businesses, Novato,
Calif.-based DriveSavers Wednesday is offering a 50 percent discount on its
data recovery services for computer hard drives damaged by the recent
flooding and tropical storm. The offer is valid until July 1, 2001.

HOUSTON - The weekend's flooding in Houston has soaked the city's cultural
hub, too, causing severe problems for the city's performing-arts
organizations. The Wortham Center, Jones Hall and the Alley Theatre in the
downtown arts district were all badly damaged.

adopted its new name, ProQuest Co., from its online division. The Ann Arbor,

CHEYENNE - Almost as soon as a draft bill of proposed changes to the Wyoming
Public Records Act came to light Wednesday, Gay Woodhouse quashed it.
The attorney general yanked the draft off the table disagreeing with parts of
it and media representatives reacted angrily to several provisions that
imported federal law into state statute.

Hospital told to turn over records

A Cook County judge Wednesday ordered Palos Community Hospital officials to
turn over within 21 days corporate records sought in the state's
investigation into whether the hospital bypassed laws in building a fitness
center in Orland Park.
The hospital has fought attempts by the Illinois Health Facilities Planning
Board, which has jurisdiction over hospital capital expenditures, to subpoena
its corporate records. The hospital appealed a ruling last March that
confirmed the state board's right to subpoena the records.

FRANKFORT Records of unclaimed property held by the state treasurer that
identify individuals and the value of their property do not have to be
publicly disclosed, according to an attorney general's opinion.
The opinion said records of property or individuals who might have unclaimed
property held by the state are subject to disclosure.

Med Center warned on flooding in '99

An engineering consultant warned the Texas Medical Center in early 1999 that
nearby Brays Bayou could barely handle a 10-year-flood event, and that even
slightly more rain would bring "enormous" devastation to the area.
In the 2 1/2 years since, Medical Center officials said, they have begun to
address some of these predicted flooding problems, but the options are
expensive and could take 10 years or more.
