Re: Watson Archives/Nature's RAIN

I appreciate Jennifer Gunter and Stephen E. Novak's clarification on the
papers of Dr. James D.Watson. I was away at the time of the original
posting
and was unable to respond quickly.

I would like to confirm that Dr.Watson is the owner of his personal
collection which is maintained by CSHL archivists located on the
laboratory's grounds.
Also Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Materials pertinent to Dr. Watson's
tenure as Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are housed at the CSHL
Archives.
We are in the process of digitizing the Watson photographic collection for
inclusion in the Archives website. Hopefully this will be available through
the web next month.

Dr. Watson also has some papers on deposit at the Harvard University
Archives.

I met with Jeremy Norman when he visited Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. As
he indicated to me he has a personal interest in the history of 19th and
20th century science and his most recent interest is in molecular biology.
Jeremy Norman is a rare books dealer, so he buys and sells rare books and
manuscripts in science, as far as I know.

However, from my experience as a librarian and archivist for many years, I
strongly believe that to preserve the history of science for scholars today
and in the future, the personal collections of prominent scientists should
be made accessible to the public. The only way I can see to make this
possible is to house them in institutional and public archives. Luckily,
many scientists share my point of view on this matter.
