labelling tin types

6/29/2001

Thanks for the assistance with
tintype labelling.

After testing the use of a pencil
on a tintype (which had almost no
remaining emulsion), we discovered
that pencil wrote easily on the lacquered
surface of the non-emulsion side, and that
even if there was some decomposition
of the lacquering, the surface still
received the pencil without any problem.
The writing was plainly visible due to
the reflective qualities of whatever is in
the pencil "lead" (graphite?).

Pencilled writing also seems to be easily
reversible with an eraser--my testing
revealed no apparent damage to the
lacquered surface after erasure.

I hope I'm not overlooking a problem
with this method.

Again, thanks for the assistance.

Michael
