Training vs. Education

Hi, gang,

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now and decided to plunge in
and invite opinions. I'm a librarian with a local history &
genealogy background and am considering making the transition out of
library work into archives work,

Since I have a mortgage, am the primary wage earner in my home, and
cannot easily relocate, I can't quit my library job to return to
school. So I can either scrounge some training here in Buffalo,
where the UB library school occasionally offers an archives & records
management class, or I can volunteer in one of several significant
archival collections here.

My question is: which would be a more productive use of my limited,
after-hours time? In other words, what will matter more to a
potential employer? Formal training or hands-on experience?

My resume is online at http://www.buffnet.net/~allemand/resume.htm,
in case anyone's really interested.

Thanks in advance!
