Re: Real world of way behind archives...



You ask for the materials now so that they are saved and transferred
to Special Collections.   If you can, create a storage grid or index that
does permit you to know roughly what might be in a group of records
and what department they came from.   For example, I might have
four boxes of the Art Department or I might have three boxes of the
Smith Family Papers of Milton, Florida.    So as those topics come up,
I can at least know which of the unprocessed boxes might be pertinent.
Then I can either search them personally or let the users go through
them (that's another interesting archives topic -- do you let researchers
look at unprocessed materials).    I do let researchers do this except
I have at least eyeballed the collections when they come in to either
identify or store separately any important items or preservation
problems.
