Kristian's comment is probably correct. I know of places that have lost catalogued materials as well as pieces from unproccessed collections. An exception may be a scholar you work with on a regular basis-once I got to a map collection because the archives knew me well and respected the work I was doing at the time.  I also did a little work for them from time to time in the archives as a volunteer. But...lets be realistic, we need to keep the documents safe and usable for the future so I guess we better remain cynical.....

You need to be careful when letting patrons look at unproccessed materials
because you have no way of knowing whether something is missing after the
patron is finished.  I know that is a bit cynical but...
