Project Archivist
Smith College

Smith College's Sophia Smith Collection invites applications for a full-time Project Archivist for a 15-month, grant-funded project to process and re-process several collections for 19th and early 20th century family papers.  The Project Archivist will arrange and describe the collections and will help organize an exhibition and event to publicize the opening.  The project starting date is October 1, 2001.  

Responsibilities: report to the Curator, work with other staff, and supervise student assistants; help set priorities and plan and monitor work flow; assess preservation and arrangement/rearrangement needs; write and edit inventories and update electronic cataloging records; monitor supplies and supplies budget; and make periodic progress reports.  Qualifications:  MA in U.S. History or an ALA-accredited MLS; formal course work in archives administration; two years full-time equivalent experience processing personal or family papers in archives or manuscripts repository; strong verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with automated applications for archives; experience creating exhibitions; two years experience supervising student assistants and other staff; and a commitment to a collaborative working process.
