My thoughts...they don't seem to have too many adherents in these
parts but I'll give it a go.

The distinction between libraries and archives is founded on a very
different orientation toward the materials in their care. Libraries
provide subject-based access to duplicate *items* while archives
consider the *whole* of body of unique records. The conceptual
orientation of archival theory considers the internal structure of that
body as well as its relationship to the creator.
