Re: Preserving spiral notebooks

We had similar rusty metal spiral wire on a series of steno notebooks, and
decided the wire had to go.

With a little practice we were able to manually straighten a few inches of
one end of the wire, then using needle-nose pliers and a gymnastic twist
of a wrist, pull out a few more inches of wire without damaging the paper
or the board covers (the loops of wire were not connected through each
hole; just bent into a hook shape - sorry I can't think of a better
description). You can't do too many notebooks at a time or it will give
you something like carpal tunnel syndrome.

So, no more rusty wire, the steno books retained their integrity, they
took up less storage space, and I ended up with several large balls of
curly, tangled wire that I used in a some art works (really!)
