Opening for University Archivist
September 2001

University Archivist - The University Archivist is
responsible for the overall administration of the
University Archives and Special Collections.
Areas of responsibility include reference and
public service, collection development and
management, and personnel.

Responsibilities: Provides assistance to students,
faculty, staff, and the general public in the use
of these collections; engages in active collection
development to provide for the transfer and
receipt of University records of permanent
historical value and records and papers of private
organizations and persons into archival custody;
implements procedures to arrange, describe, and
preserve archival collections and associated
materials; develops policies and procedures for
the appraisal of collections and oversees the
disposal of records and papers judged to be
non-archival; oversees microfilming projects;
scheduling, directing, monitoring, and providing
ongoing training of the staff and student
employees in all facets of their work; reports to
the Head of Reference and Instruction; engages in
active internal and external outreach to enhance
the visibility and effectiveness of the University
and to promote the acquisition and use of
University Archives collections; actively works
with the Director of Development and the Dean to
support development and fundraising for the
Libraries; cooperates with area research centers
and other institutions of higher learning;
supports the Public History program of the EWU
History Department through teaching a variety of
class sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required - ALA accredited MLS
Degree, or an advanced degree in American History
and degree or substantial course work in archives
and records management; minimum of 6 - 8 years of
experience in an academic library or university
archives; demonstrated high level of written and
oral communication skills; demonstrated knowledge
of history of the American West in general, and
the Pacific and Inland Northwest.
Preferred - Experience working with federal and
state archival agencies.

SALARY/APPOINTMENT:  Position available September
16, 2001.  Nine-month, tenure-track appointment at
rank of Librarian II.  Salary based on experience
and in accordance with provisions of the faculty
union contract.  TIAA/CREFF retirement program;
comprehensive medical insurance; 18 days vacation
and established holidays; generous sick leave;
assistance with moving expenses; support for
professional development; no state or local income
taxes.
