Dealing with handwritten notes

Hi, all.

I'm a graduate student taking a course on archival practice and research,
and I am also working on a preservation project on a new collection. My
conundrum is that some of the most valuable work in the collection is in the
form of handwritten notes on legal pads (and the handwriting is VERY
difficult to read). I have already made copies of each of the pads and am
considering making an electronic version as well. My question for the list
is whether or not there is software available that can help transcribe these
handwritten notes into a searchable (and legible) form?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to offer!!
