[LAORLEAN-L] Confederate Pensions]--Also for Texas
Sharon informed us that Louisiana Confederate Pension applications may be
searched online.
Confederate Pension Applications for Texas may also be searched at:
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/pensions/introcpi.html
All the data elements mentioned for Louisiana Pensions are also applicable
for Texas pensions but there are two other details worth mentioning. (1)
One did not have to serve in a Texas unit to receive a Texas pension. All
that was required was Confederate service (such as my great uncle who
claimed to have been wounded serving with an Arkansas guerilla band even
though he would have only been about 10 years old). (2) Confederate
Pensions were also awarded to numerous African-Americans who could claim
some service to the Confederate States of America such as accompanying
owners to war or laboring on fortifications. These tend to be more detailed
than applications from the soldiers as their names did not appear on muster
rolls and had to be supported by affidavits from people who knew about their
service.
