THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs.


THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary papers and early manuscripts and rare books. In addition to its distinguished General Collection, the library houses the Osborn Collection, noted for its British literary and historical manuscripts, and outstanding special collections devoted to American literature, German literature and Western Americana. RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general direction of the Head of Public Services, the Assistant Public Services Librarian co-ordinates reference services on site, through correspondence, and over the telephone, including possible services on Saturdays and evenings. Manages the range of services at the Reader Services Desk; supervises a staff of 8 FTE.  Acts as liaison with other Public Services units to coordinate public service policies and improve services.  Assists in applying new technologies to improve service to readers and the efficient operation of the department; assists in integrating the circulation and patron functions of the Voyager System in the Public Services Unit in the Beinecke Library.  Serves as Acting Department Head in the absence of the Head of Public Services. Assists in managing other Department services and Library programs such as photo-duplication services (microfilming, photocopying, photography, and digital scanning,) stack maintenance. Provides assistance as necessary for other library programs -- outreach, instruction, exhibitions, and loans.  Contributes to the development of the Reference collections.  Contributes to long range departmental planning. Represents the department and Library in the academic and professional community by serving on various committees and task forces.  Beginning January 2002, some evening and Saturday hours may occur.  Is expected to be active professionally.


QUALIFICATIONS
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.  Additional advanced degree desirable.  Knowledge of foreign language(s) and reference tools in all formats.  Experience in special collections area and experience in an academic or research library preferred.  Strong public services orientation and interest in computer and educational technology; experience with automated systems, including WWW technologies and tools.  Understanding of the scholarly use of library collections. Understanding of current developments in research librarianship.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and library colleagues. Supervisory experience highly desirable. Ability to work cooperatively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.   Effective oral and written communication skills, analytical skills, and problem solving ability.


SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
