THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs.


THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary papers and early manuscripts and rare books. In addition to its distinguished General Collection, the library houses the Osborn Collection, noted for its British literary and historical manuscripts, and outstanding special collections devoted to American literature, German literature and Western Americana. The Manuscript Unit is responsible for accessioning, processing, and cataloging the library's manuscript, archival and non-print collections, as well as for their conservation and preservation. The staff consists of the Unit Head, 6 Archivists, 2 Archives Assistants, student assistants, and special project personnel.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of the Curator of Modern Books and Manuscripts, the Assistant Curator shares responsibility for participating in collection development across a broad range of materials, including books, manuscripts, ephemera, broadsides, photographs, and electronic media; planning scholarly programs, and designing and mounting exhibitions. The Assistant Curator also works with the cataloging, conservation, and preservation units of the library to meet the needs of the collection in those areas. The Assistant Curator provides specialized assistance to researchers in person and at a distance and collaborates with the public services unit to provide reference service, including possible service on Saturdays and evenings.  The Assistant Curator has opportunities to engage in instruction, teaching, and classroom presentation.

The Assistant Curator is encouraged to publish scholarly works that promote the collection and is expected to be active professionally.


QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. or an equivalent scope of knowledge in literature, history, art history, or other appropriate field. Desirable areas of expertise include Children?s Literature, Early American History, or Modernism. M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited school desirable.  Proficiency in one or more modern European languages is required. Appointment to the Librarian II rank requires two years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.  Appointment to the Librarian III rank requires five years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.  Ability to plan and execute effective programs and to manage diverse collection activities.  Commitment to organizational and technological change.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
