database systems for archives

Dear list,

I would like to thank all who answered my question and summerize the results
for the list. I received nine responses, with a number of different
programs being used. Here is a list of the different programs that
archivists felt provided good support:

Voyager: http://www.endinfosys.com/prods/voyager.htm

Re:discovery: www.rediscov.com (not currently being used, but was used
formerly by one collection)

InMagic: www.inmagic.com

PastPerfect: http://www.museumsoftware.com/

GenCat: http://www.eloquent-systems.com/

Minisis Inc. http://www.minisisinc.com/

Also two archivists reported using "home grown" systems in Access. One
respondant reported using SNAP! but felt that the program no longer served
the archive's needs and hoped to switch to something new. Some of the
systems, like Voyager and GenCat, are designed to integrate all library
functions into a single OPAC, while Re:Discovery required each database to
searched separately. PastPerfect was recommended for a smaller collections.
I was also told that it is difficult to find a "one program fits all," i.e.
a program that will perform records management functions, keep track of
accession information, create finding aids, and create catalog records.
Another suggestion I received was to send out a RFI to companies that looked
promising, and then choose the software that best fits the archive's needs.
