part-time positions available at the Maine Historical Society



1) Part-time Reference Assistant - Portland.
Maine Historical Society has an immediate opening in its Research Library for a part-time Reference Assistant. Duties include greeting patrons, explaining the use of card and online catalogs, paging and re-shelving library and archival materials, and other general reference tasks including answering telephone, postal and email inquires. Minimum BA degree in history or related field and computer skills required; genealogical or research skills desirable; experience in libraries or archives preferred. 15 hours per week; possibly some evening or Saturday hours.   Located on MHS' Center for Maine History campus on Congress Street in the Portland Arts District, the non-circulating research facility is the library of record for the study of Maine history and genealogy. 2) Part-time Manuscript Curator - Portland
Maine Historical Society has an opening beginning October 1, 2001 in its Research Library for a part-time Manuscripts Curator.  Duties include processing manuscript and special collections, creating finding aids and inventories, and imputing cataloguing records into the state-wide MINERVA database using current archival and library standards. Requirements include archives and manuscript experience; computer skills including MARC-format cataloguing and database experience; and the ability to lift 40 pounds.  Minimum BA with MLS or equivalent preferred.  15 hours per week minimum; position a through at least December, 2002.  Located on MHS' Center for Maine History campus on Congress Street in the Portland Arts District, the non-circulating research facility is the library of record for the study of Maine history and genealogy.
