Re: Humidity Confusion

Joy,
The structural "leaks" in your space may also be affecting the relative humidity. Here in Maryland, where the summers are REALLY humid, we found that the archives, which included three exterior walls, had "insulation leaks" at certailn structural junctures. These included any spot where the insulation was broken by another physical element like studs or beams, electrical wiring, sprinkler pipes, ductwork. The area was retrofitted to tighten up all these spots, and our climate control has dramatically improved.

We still have days when our optimal temp/humidity parameters aren't met, but they are fewer.

Dear list members,

Not being much use when it comes to science, I have been
much confused over problems we've had with our climate
control system. The humidity has been higher than I'd like--
60-65%, while the setpoint is at 45%. The maintenance dept.
tells me that in order to lower the humidity, we'd have to
lower the temperature, and the system simply won't go any lower.
(It's currently running about 63 degrees.) But relative humidity
goes down as the temp. goes up, not down. I've checked the
specs for the system and they are, to say the least, unhelpful.

Can anyone explain this to me? I'm assuming that the system is
designed to measure relative humidity & not absolute humidity,
because this is what makes sense. If anyone can clarify things,
I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Joy Kingsolver
