Acid-free materials sold in stores

Lately, I have seen materials such as photo album and scrapbook pages
labeled as acid-free in stores like Hallmark, Walmart, etc.
Does anyone know if these are really archival quality or is this just an
advertising gimmick?
I am giving a presentation in a couple of weeks to a genealogy class and I
know this question is going to come up.
