ART September Meeting

Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York
September Meeting Notice

VANISHED: Photographs from the Prospect Park Archive
Prospect Park's 135-year history is filled with many fascinating stories,
and the story behind the Park's lost structures and places is one of its
most intriguing.
This exhibition, VANISHED, focuses upon Prospect Park's most fantastic and
captivating lost structures. VANISHED was inspired by a passionate
conversation among Park staff about the many structures that had been
originally designed by landscape architects, Olmstead and Vaux, but lost from
the Park's landscape. Perhaps the most intriguing images are of the structures
that were conceived for the Park but never built. There were over 60 rustic
shelters and arbors in the Park at the turn of the century, many of which
lined
the Lake. Today, two of the shelters have been reconstructed based on historic
photographs. Additional research quickly revealed that the loss of a structure
is more significant than a simple missing bridge or building; it represents a
personal loss to the people who used it.

Building on these successes, the Park's architects, landscape-architects, and
engineers are rebuilding a third rustic structure from the Park's lost past.
Today, Prospect Park is recreating history in unique ways. Photos from the
Alliance's historic archive are proving a valuable source of inspiration for
designers creating new structures, as well as those seeking to reconstruct
lost
buildings and landscape. The Prospect Park Alliance hopes through the process
of preservation and history to unify the diverse communities who use the Park.
Join Julie Moffat, Archivist/Historian, and Rachel Keegan, Assistant
Archivist/Records Manager for the Prospect Park Alliance, for a tour of the
exhibit followed by a discussion on the role the archives has played in the
restoration of Prospect Park. Rachel will also discuss the beginnings of an
active records management program for the park.
