Re: On-line auctions

If I had a dilemma like this, I might be more apt to offer it up to another
library with an archives on medical or pharmaceutical history. So far, we do
have several copies of certain very important books, but that's good thing
because they are very old and some are falling apart. Duplicate photos are
good too because they can be backups to the original, however, it may not be
so good if you have problems with space. We have space problems here, but
not with photos and other historical artifacts, just books. :)

I think this discussion is very important. I don't think, however, that we
have hit on the meat of the question yet. What are the ethical
ramifications surrounding selling deaccessioned items in online auctions?
What type of image do patrons get when they see a museum or
archives "selling" their collections? We have discussed this at my
institution, but the staff has always decided that it wouldn't "look good"
to patrons for us to sell our collections online. I have not yet made up my
mind on this subject and would like to encourage further discussion.
