The 90s are over

Oddly, my husband and I had a long discussion last
night at dinner over the nature of decades. The
decades don't last from Jan. 1, 19x0 to Dec. 31, 19x9,
but are set by certain events.

For example: the 60s started when Kennedy was
assasinated. The 90s (arguably) started when Netscape
went public.

We speculated last night when we would know that the
90s are over and the Oughts (or Noughts) have begun.

I fear this is that line in the sand.

But as I am confronted with the horrors of today I am
attempting to make sense. I am going to give birth any
day now and suddenly worry what the world will be like
for this baby.

I guess never before have I been so uncertain about
the future. I lived in Europe in December 1989 when
the Iron Curtain came crashing down and experieced
such a collective sense of euphoria about the future.
That was the most exciting time of my life. Now
everything has been turned on its end.

What does today's event mean for the future? And with
such a disaster will we ever really recover? Is life
going to be the same? I have studied history
extensively, but to live through it... words fail me.
