News from New York

Dear colleagues:

Manhattan seems very quiet today. Even my sleepy Washington Heights
neigborhood, far away from the disaster scene, had a Saturday morining
feel to it. With all the public and parochial schools closed, and the
closure of the financial markets, most people seem to be staying home.

Columbia is open as are the colleges of City University, but not much
else. Everything south of 14th St. is off-limits. When I left my
building this morning, our super did a double take and said increduously
"You're going to work today?" Well, yes I am, though I suspect no one's
going to get much accomplished.

For those of you who know archivists here who work downtown, I can tell
you that Steve Wheeler, Jean Hrichus Elliott, and Ira Galtman are all
safe. There are several others I have not heard from, but I'm cautiously
optimistic.

Today, like yesterday, is one of the most beautiful days of the year
here. Crisp, mild, and utterly clear skies -- perfect weather for
rescue operations.
