Re: Instant urban legend

Here in the Kansas City area, the same gas panic was occurring. There were gas stations here that were charging between $4 and $6 a gallon. After the local TV stations began airing stories during the news, the prices returned to around $1.55 a gallon. Apparently, the attorney general in both Kansas and Missouri are going to begin investigating price gouging.

There is nothing comical about what happened yesterday, but a bizarre
offshoot began in the Denver area last night. Suddenly long lines appeared
at gas stations, as rumors began to circulate that gas would cost $5 a
gallon by week's end. It seems that as people drove by gas stations and
as they saw lines they would panic and get in line themselves. I heard on
NPR that this also happened in Minneapolis. People waiting in line for
hours and some stations running dry. The oil companies and AAA are
insisting that there is absolutely no truth to the rumors of increased
gas prices. I am reminded of the movie "1941" where the citizens of
Southern California react to an imagined Japanese invasion.
