Re: Access

Dean, I'm sending you privately a sample copy of our Access database; please
feel free to use it as you see fit, since we paid for its development and
I've been told by our State Archivist that I may do this. Since this sample
copy (from which I have deleted a great deal of information about shelf
locations; I would not wish to "share" that!) was created, we've split it
into two linked databases - one for the structure, the other for the data,
since it's now nearing 40 megs in size. Not to worry, Inland Fisheries and
Wildlife has a 100 meg plus Access database running on its server without
problems.

Anyone else who's interested, I'll be glad to send you the same zip file.

I am one of those archivists whose knowledge of Access is
so little that even contemplating how to design an archives
database is daunting. For years, I used Lotus 1-2-3, Q&A,
Paradox, and others...and once I'd become incredibly
efficient at them, our administrators would announce the
change to "something new and better" ...

Some of the archivists on this list have working Access
databases and I would literally jump at the chance to get
a copy of their working base so I didn't have to reinvent
the wheel. So when folks don't respond to some of these
"help" listings ... I always know that we're all in the same
boat.
