Re: Double Depth Shelving Query

Since Tom's been so nice on the Access questions, I'll see if I can offer
any suggestions.

I'm assuming that the shelves are not open on both sides; if they are (sorry
for the Duh! response) just turn the boxes so the labels are open to the
outside. Assuming you've thought of that, and that buying new single-width
shelves is out of the question, my advice would be to do a shelf read and
identify the location of each box. If you can label the shelves & stack
ranges, try & put a list together containing the stack number & shelf
location of each box and print out a list (or, of course, build an Access DB
to keep track of it with a field for box location :) )

The result is you have intellectual control over the boxes even if the
physical arrangement is not ideal; if you get a chance to change your
physical layout you might be better off, but that's often not a possibility.
I happen to have double width shelving for much of my collection, but I have
aisles on both sides so I can get to all the boxes from the front; in my
case, the double width is fine. I would also suggest that if you have
oversized boxes, use the double shelves for those; they tend to take up more
space than a single width anyway, so you may as well give them the extra
support of the doubles & that way nothing goes behind.

Of course, then you have the problem of boxes stacked on top of each
other...
