Re: Double Depth Shelving Query

Seriously, where we have double-depth (and double-height) shelving we try to
arrange the boxes in a consistent manner to facilitate retrieval. For
example, box 1 will be on top in front; 2 on top in back; 3 on bottom in
front; 4 on bottom in back. Generally, I only put record center boxes on
such shelving. Or "banker's boxes" of unprocessed records.

It's certainly not an ideal method of storage. The boxes on bottom tend to
get somewhat crushed (especially the lids), and the wrestling of boxes to
and fro tends to damage them. That's why I ONLY use such shelving for very
low-access material.

I'd say it's more complicated, like the location of the box you want
is directly related to the height of the person wanting it. For me, at
6 feet 3 inches and getting stiffer and older all the time, it's always
on the very bottom shelf. For my former boss, who was a shade
less than 5 feet tall, it was always on the very top. Funny how
those boxes can jump around!
