East Carolina University's Joyner Library welcomes you to the Eastern North
Carolina Digital History Exhibits. The initial three exhibits, the East
Carolina University Centennial Exhibit, the Steamers Exhibit, and the
Tobacco Exhibit, focus on the turn of the century, approximately from the
1870's through 1910's. Digitized pamphlets, news articles, book excerpts,
photographs, broadsides, letters and other materials are included.
Materials come from the North Carolina Collection, and the Special
Collections Department including the East Carolina University Archives and
the East Carolina Manuscript Collection.

Materials have been digitized and transcribed. Genealogical researchers and
social historians may wish to explore the 1900 Pitt County Census in the
Tobacco Exhibit which provides information about individuals and
socio-economic conditions. People interested in steamboats and
transportation during the 1870 through the 1880's may wish to look through
the Manuscript Collection's Askew Family Papers in the Steamers Exhibit.
Original letters from the four Askew brothers who developed and ran the
Steamer Bertie are available and supplemental information from local
primary resources has been provided as well. Finally, for researchers
interested in educational history, the East Carolina University Archives has
provided information about events leading up to the founding of the East
Carolina Teachers Training School in 1907-1908 and the first graduation in
1911.

We look forward to adding more material to the current exhibits and
continuing to explore Eastern North Carolina's history in future exhibits.
