Re: Awkward encounter

Maybe you'll feel better about the water bottle part after hearing our story. About two weeks ago, our reference librarian came in at 8:00 and started turning on the reference computers. She noticed that one of the computers was not coming up right; when she typed on the keyboard, her fingers got slightly wet, and she realized there were water drops on a few of the keys. Eventually, she discovered five computers that had water on keys, some of which were working, and some weren't. She had decided in consultation with someone else just to let them dry by evaporation, but when I heard about this, knowing something about the way keyboards are constructed, I turned one upside down and let the water drain out to show her how much water was in it. From the five keyboards I got over a cup of water. All five keyboards had to be replaced.

As for letting the person see the book: I have so few users of the rare books room that I do let just about anyone in who asks, including a few weeks ago, a students whose answer on the rare books registration form to the question "What is the nature of your research?" was "Knowledge." I do, however, have a list of books that are in the rare books room for which we have other editions of
reprints in the general collection, so I can steer people to those. This is also handy when someone comes in and wants to use the rare books when I'm not there.
