extension of copyright question

As we've been in a (dot.com) "slump" that has become a r/Recession, lots of companies are closing their doors.  A corporation is an entity unto itself, right? And it is obligated to maintain certain records.  If that company has also created and
marketed a software product, to which it holds intellectual property rights (of which copyright is a species, right?), what happens to its records AND to its product when it folds?

What happens to a company or individual that has purchased and implemented the software, and perhaps has a maintenance agreement?  What happens to the license, with the limitations on in-house modifications to the software?

This is a little off-track, but it *is* a question re:business archives -- rather like the salvaged photos...

Thanks!
