ASSISTANT REFERENCE ARCHIVIST (**PART-TIME**)
Institute Archives and Special Collections, MIT
(Archivist I)

The MIT Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and service-oriented archivist
to join the staff of the Institute Archives and Special Collections in
developing and providing sophisticated, pro-active services to a
world-class university community.  This position will provide the
opportunity for a beginning archivist to contribute her or his skills,
talents, and creativity to the vision of service excellence of one of the
premier university archives in the country.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under the direction of the Reference Archivist, assists
with all reference and outreach activities of the Institute Archives and
Special Collections.  Assists in the maintenance of the reading room and
working with researchers on-site.  Answers telephone, mail, and electronic
mail reference requests as needed.  With the Institute Archivist and the
Reference Archivist, interprets and advises on the application of Institute
Archives access and other records policies.  Assists in the development and
implementation of public service aspects of the Archives' website. Working
with the Reference Archivist, implements outreach programs for MIT
administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other users of the Archives'
collections.  Supervises interns and student workers as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required  An MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited school of
library/information science or a graduate degree in history, with a
concentration in archives management; experience with bibliographic and
research techniques; the ability to communicate clearly in person and in
writing, to work systematically and carefully, and to respect the
confidentiality of records; the ability to communicate effectively in
groups and with faculty, students, administrators, and peers; the ability
to exercise independent judgment and to participate positively and
constructively in staff group endeavors; work experience with automated
bibliographic systems and the MARC format; knowledge of the development,
implementation, and maintenance of websites; physical stamina for lifting
40 lb. boxes. Desirable - Related professional or pre-professional work
experience; experience with or knowledge of Dreamweaver and Filemaker;
experience with or knowledge of EAD; some knowledge of the history of
higher education, the sciences, and/or technology.

HIRING SALARY: $18,000 minimum.  Actual salary will depend on experience.

The MIT Libraries include five major subject libraries (architecture and
planning; engineering; humanities; science; management and social sciences)
and several branch libraries in more specialized subject areas.  The
Libraries hold more than 2.6 million printed volumes, and extensive
collections of other physical formats. Over 200 digital databases and over
3000 electronic journals are licensed for access on the Institute's
network. In July 2001, the Libraries will implement Ex Libris' Aleph system
as its public Web-based catalog and as the support system for user service
and processing functions.  The Libraries' webpage
(http://libraries.mit.edu/) presents information about library services, as
well as access to information resources through the staff-designed Vera
interface. MIT Libraries maintain membership in the Association of Research
Libraries, the Boston Library Consortium, and OCLC through NELINET, as well
as in EDUCAUSE and the Coalition of Networked Information.

The MIT Institute Archives houses records that document the history of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the people who have been a part
of that history.  The department gathers unpublished material including
official records of the Institute; personal and professional papers of the
faculty, staff, and students; published material about the Institute; and
MIT theses and technical reports.
