Re: Certification

This alway DOES open old wounds, because many people feel strongly about the
issue, both pro and con. I tend to be indifferent to negative regarding the
certification program, because I think it has accomplished few of its stated
objectives -- but it probably does no harm, and the content of the exam may
have helped improve the standards of archival educational programs to some
extent.

You say, as do others, that "many job descriptions are now asking for
certification," and yet every time I check, only a tiny minority of archival
job listings mention ACA certification. Of the 20 most recent job listings
at the SAA job listings site, two mention certification as "preferred," and
one lists it as "desireable." This ratio is quite consistent with the
several spot checks I've made over recent years.

If YOU feel being certified was a valuable professional development
experience, then the time and money was well spent for you.
