Re: Certification

Ok, despite the numerous temptations, I rarely reply on the listserv. However,
in this case, I may make an exception.

I have seen numerous arguments both for and against certification, all with some
merit. One argument I have not seen, and hopefully did not overlook, is the
need for some type of professional identity. Unless we, as archivists, set
ourselves apart in some way, we will never achieve professional and financial
recognition. Certification is one way to do that.

Also, a recent posting on this issue even made light of having an MLS, much less
certification. To this person, I would say the same thing. The degree is one
way to set archivists aside as specialists in a field, especially if the MLS
specialized in archival administration or some similar program.

Personally, I believe that the educational process should be two fold. First,
an MLS from a program certified by SAA in archival administration/practice that
also requires practical internships. Second, a professional exam like the
current one. This twofold approach is hardly a unique option (i.e. The medical,
legal, and engineering professions to name but a few).

My apologies for being longwinded, and no I am not criticizing experienced
archivists who may not have certification or an MLS. Perhaps that is why I do
not reply more often.:-)
