ZAI/AMELEX (EOE) for the U.S. Mint, Historical Collection
Washington, DC

Project Description:
The U.S. Mint Archives Project has two primary goals.  The first is to
create a physical archive out of the materials in the U.S. Mint historical
collection.  The second is to digitize and then store the materials in an
electronic database with searching capabilities.  Through the U.S. Mint's
internal and external web sites, the digital collection will be accessible
to U.S. Mint staff and its customers and will assist in the expansion of
current coinage markets.  The Archives Project will address the following
project objectives: to improve access to materials through digitization and
subject indexing; to provide historical materials for the creation of
electronic resources such as CD-ROMs; and to provide educational
professionals with U.S. Mint materials that can be incorporated into
educational programs.  The position is full time and permanent.

Responsibilities:
Manage the day-to-day activities of the project.  Process and arrange the
U.S. Mint historical collection (monographs, documents, still images, and
microform).  Perform original cataloging and prepare and maintain finding
aids according to established local practice.  Lead the ongoing creation of
the collection's subject headings and its controlled vocabulary.  Manage the
preservation and digital conversion of the collection. Plan, direct, and
review the work of an Archives Technician and Scanning Operators. Prepare
weekly reports on the progress of the project.   Maintain a knowledge of the
items contained in the collection and assist the Historian's Office in
locating these files.

Required qualifications:
MLS from an accredited institution with coursework and formal training in
archival theory and practice.  A Masters degree in another academic
discipline with archives and manuscripts training or certification with
experience in processing archival collections will receive consideration.
Working knowledge of  LC Subject Headings, AACR2, and other LC cataloging
standards.  Familiarity with preservation standards for archival
collections.  Demonstrated knowledge of American history and a broad
knowledge in the humanities.  Competence in basic software applications in a
Windows environment.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both
orally and in writing.  Organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to
detail.  Ability to work well as a member of a group and individually in a
demanding and rapidly changing environment.  Two years of relevant
professional experience.

Highly desired:
Working knowledge of imaging and scanning projects.  Involvement in
professional organizations.
