Job Announcement - Sacramento History Online - Scanning Technician



POSITION TITLE - Scanning Technician, "Sacramento History Online"

PROJECT DESCRIPTION - "Sacramento History Online" is a one-year
LSTA-funded demonstration project to offer Web access to primary source
materials relating to the history of Sacramento.  The history of
transportation in Sacramento, from the mid-19th century through 1929,
will be the first theme to be developed for the Web site.  A
fully-searchable database will accompany the images.  The grant also
funds preparation of a narrative history of transportation in the
Sacramento area, and a curriculum guide to enhance the educational value
of the online collection.

Four Sacramento County institutions ?  the California History Room of
the California State Library, the California State Railroad Museum
Library, the Sacramento Archives & Museum Collection Center, and the
Sacramento Room of the Sacramento Public Library ? will each select
items which relate to various modes of transportation (rail, bus,
maritime, and other surface modes, as well as air).  Different document
formats will be scanned including photographs, ephemera, maps and
engineering drawings, posters, broadsides, and promotional publications.

RESPONSIBILITIES - Under the supervision of the Project Manager:
* Maintenance and set-up of scanning equipment
* Prepare documents for scanning.
* Scan documents and transparencies following the California State
Library Scanning Standards.
* Create TIFF files for master images and JPEG files for web access and
thumbnail images.
* Backup scanned images to CD-ROMS.
* Maintain inventory and appropriate records for digital files.
* Coordinate digital files with document records.

REQUIREMENTS - Training and demonstrated experience in scanning and
using Adobe PhotoShop.  Knowledge of digital imaging, color theory,
complements and contrasts.  Ability to follow instructions, work
independently and as a team member.  Good organizational skills and
aptitude for detail work.  Appreciation for the care and handling of
fragile documents.  Class C driver's License.

STARTING DATE - Mid-November / Early December 2001

WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE -  Full time, up to 1735 hours until
September 30, 2002.  The incumbent will perform on-site scanning at each
of the four participating institutions and accomplish overall digital
file management at the California State Railroad Museum Library.

SALARY - $15-$20/hour, commensurate with experience
