Job Announcement - Sacramento History Online - Project Manager



POSITION TITLE Project Manager, "Sacramento History Online"

PROJECT DESCRIPTION  "Sacramento History Online" is a one-year
LSTA-funded demonstration project to offer Web access to primary source
materials relating to the history of Sacramento.  The history of
transportation in Sacramento, from the mid-19th century through 1929,
will be the first theme to be developed for the Web site.  A
fully-searchable database will accompany the images.  The grant also
funds preparation of a narrative history of transportation in the
Sacramento area, and a curriculum guide to enhance the educational value
of the online collection.

Four Sacramento County institutions ? the California History Room of the
California State Library, the California State Railroad Museum Library,
the Sacramento Archives & Museum Collection Center, and the Sacramento
Room of the Sacramento Public Library ? will each select items which
relate to various modes of transportation (rail, bus, maritime, and
other surface modes, as well as air).  Different document formats will
be scanned including photographs, ephemera, maps and engineering
drawings, posters, broadsides, and promotional publications.

RESPONSIBILITIES - Under the general supervision of the Project
Committee:
* Work with the participating institutions and their representatives to
coordinate all aspects of the project to ensure that the objectives of
the project are met.
* Chair monthly project meetings and coordinate resolution of issues
among participating institutions.
* Develop workplan, roles and procedures for the Project.
* Evaluate and select requisite hardware and software.
* Supervise Scanning Technician.
* Work with vendors for the duplication of oversize documents.
* Work with Project participants in the preparation, cataloguing and
digital archiving of the documents.
* Coordinate with information technology staff in developing the Web
page and online database.
* Monitor quality control.
* Monitor expenses and authorize expenditures.
* Complete quarterly reports to LSTA.

REQUIREMENTS - College degree.  Digital project management experience
required.  Experience with library and archive procedures.  Competence
with database and word processing programs as well as digital
technologies and standards is a necessity.  Excellent administrative,
organizational and interpersonal skills.  Aptitude for detail work.
Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.  Ability to
synthesize information from disparate sources.  Class C driver's
license.

STARTING DATE - Immediate

WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE -  Part time, up to 1040 hours until
September 30, 2002.  Office location will be the California State
Railroad Museum Library.  The position will require on-site visits to
each participating institution to coordinate and monitor digital file
production.

SALARY - Commensurate with experience
