Red Ox?

We're currently working on a collection of 2" transparencies which
seem to have "redox" or something that none of us are familiar
with. They came from upstate New York and were stored in an
attic for about 40 years before we got them (date from the 1950s).
Our preservation department said they had heard of this but had
never before seen it. The problem manifests itself in red spot all
over the transparency, and cannot be cleaned by any means we
could figure out. I supposed if we want to use the images we can
PhotoShop them out.

Any more information on this problem from the collective wisdom of
the list would be, as always, greatly appreciated.
