Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York, Inc.

NOVEMBER 2001 MEETING NOTICE
Ten Days that Shook New York: The Transit Strike of 1966

The New-York Historical Society will present a public program featuring
several distinguished speakers, who will discuss their perspective
regarding the infamous transit strike of 1966, when New York came to a
standstill in the year that John Lindsay started his mayoral term. Vincent
Cannato, author of The Ungovernable City: John Lindsay and His Struggle to
Save New York. Joshua Freeman, author of Working-Class New York: Life and
Labor Since World War II; and Roger Toussaint, president of the Transport
Workers Union (Local 100), will address city politics, mayoral drama, and
the implications for labor that arose from this event. Although the
genesis of the urban crises during this era was vastly different from the
recent terrorist events, the retelling of this crucial period in
twentieth-century history will present financial, economic and
transportation issues which similarly challenge the current mayoral
administration of New York City. This program is followed by a book signing.

Kenneth T. Jackson, the President of the New-York Historical Society, and
noted author and lecturer, will speak prior to the public program. Mr.
Jackson will discuss the New-York Historical Society's response to the
events of September 11, 2001, and the nature of the documentation
effort. Mr. Jackson is the Jacques Barzun Professor of History at Columbia
University, the co-author of the two-volume series American Vistas, and
author of a number of books, including Cities in American History and the
editor of the Columbia History of Urban Life, and The Encyclopedia of New
York City.

Please Note: Meeting participants are invited to attend this program as
guests of the New-York Historical Society. All program attendees are
