Re: The thorny job application process

Before doing Archives, I worked in academic placement for our graduating
Ph.D.'s. I learned that all search committees are different. Some are well
organized and have good support. Others are chaotic and don't know what
they are doing or how to do it. I always told my clients not to feel
discouraged or slighted if they never heard from the committee after they
sent in their application. It just means the committee is one of the more
disorganized type. I would suggest not contacting them after the process is
over and the position has been filled. Chances are they won't listen, and
most likely won't learn either. Save yourself the emotional energy.

Subject: The thorny job application process

What would you do?

Here's the situation: in your community, a position opens up at
organization X for which you are qualified so you send in an
application. After 6-8 weeks, you learn through conversation
with your peers that person Y was appointed to the job. More
weeks pass. Meanwhile, organization X still has not
acknowledged your application or sent you a rejection letter.

Do you bring the oversight to their attention? If so, how?

Or do you let it go, not wanting to get "a reputation" in your
community?
