digital audio advice

Hello;

In an effort to replace a failing portable analog tape recorder I am
exploring issues and options surrounding digital recordings of oral
histories. I am considering DAT and MiniDisc technology at this time but
would like to get recommendations from people who have recorded oral
histories with digital equipment in any format (as well as those who think
digital audio for oral histories is a bad idea).

I am reviewing professional quality portable digital systems for field
recordings which would "immediately" be transferred to archival quality
reel-to-reel audio tapes for preservation storage. So far I have not
located web technology reviews that are very helpful, nor have I found oral
history sites that address the issues of analog vs digital. Can you offer
any advice?

Thanks so much!
Barb
