Re: Questions that didn't used to be sinister

For the past few years I have done part time work for the library of an
architecture school in Boston. Students are often asking for plans of
buildings for class projects. Our collection of plans is quite small, so we
referr people to the Boston Public Library. Until this thread, I had never
considered that, in the light of Sept. 11, this routine practice may cause
suspision or alarm for another library. I will continue to refer people to
the BPL, and suggest that the students explain why they are there (although
I suspect the BPL already asks them).

Back in my own antediluvian archival past, I was in charge of the
architecture collections here at the UofU, which are quite
extensive. I think I was put in charge of them because I was tall
enough and big enough to move them around, and my boss at the
time was only 5 feet tall. Anyway, I made it policy then and
assume those in charge of them still have it as a policy that no
copies of blueprints of any existing structure (public, private, what-
some-ever) can be made without written (not phoned, written)
permission from the owner of the building. I've actually had people
respond and say thanks for doing that. It just seemed to be
sensible at the time and does now, even more so.
