Supervisor of Public Programs Position Available at Henry Ford Museum



Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, in Dearborn Michigan, is soliciting
applications for several archival positions to be housed in the new Benson
Ford Research Center (opening March 2002--see succeeding messages for
additional position descriptions.  The Museum is a non-profit educational
institution independent of the Ford Motor Company.  However, these
positions have been created in partnership with Ford, and are focused
principally on processing and servicing the several thousand cubic feet of
Ford historical corporate records donated to the Museum since 1964.

TITLE:  Supervisor of Public Services
TEAM:  Research Center Programs, Public Services

SUMARY OF PURPOSE:
Assists with the development, and is responsible for the management and
administration of public programs and services provided by Historical
Resources through the Benson Ford Research Center.  This includes research
use of the archives, library, photograph, and special collections; rights
and reproductions; collections-based programming developed for special
groups; provision of special services to the Henry Ford Academy; fee-for-
service activities including special access, remote reference, and
extensive new contractual services for Ford Motor Company (under the terms
of a unique collaborative agreement with the Company, basic reference
service for Ford Motor Company business inquiries have become the
responsibility of the Museum?s Research Center); and other programming
opportunities, such as tours and lectures.  Establishes and monitors
standards for delivery of services and programs to a wide audience,
including HFMGV staff, students and educators, the media, collectors and
enthusiasts, and members of the public.  Responsible for management and
administration of Public Services staff and development, and management of
budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Develops long-range and short-term goals for public programs and
services provided by Historical Resources division through the Benson Ford
Research Center; develops and monitors key indicators

2. Identifies opportunities and develops new programs and services through
critical analysis of public service needs

3. Sets priorities and determines budgetary requirements for public
programs and services in consultation with Head of Research Center Programs.

4. Has primary responsibility for training, directing, coordinating, and
evaluating paid and unpaid staff.
 Counsels, advises, and coaches managers and staffs of Reference Services
and Access Services units.
 Directly manages staff of reference archivists who provide in-depth
reference services, under terms of this formal collaborative agreement, in
partnership with the Ford Motor Company Archives.

5. Coordinates on-going delivery of programs; establishes service policies
and procedures
 Establishes and monitors standards for delivery of collection and library
information to users, both in electronic and analog formats
 Develops and implements assessment mechanisms of programs
 Mediates conflicts between Public Services and other units; resolves user
service delivery issues
 Works closely with Ford Motor Company?s Archives Manager to coordinate
delivery of collaborative reference service; resolve service delivery
issues; refine and monitor standards for service delivery.

6. Administers, improves, and maintains vital departmental databases
(particularly for researcher registration and access services), is
responsible for ensuring the database shared with the Ford Motor Company
Archives is being used properly and fully by the reference archivists who
provide service to the Company under terms of the collaborative agreement,
and works with the Archives Manager at Ford to improve and refine the
shared database as needed.

7. Assists the Head of Research Center Programs in negotiating intellectual
property issues and special access to the collections.

8. Represents Historical Resources to others, both in the Museum and in the
community

9. Performs other activities as necessary.

10. Contributes to the effective team management of all problems, issues,
and opportunities.

11. Remains current in relevant professional theories and practices, and is
professionally active.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced degree in information management, archives administration, or
related field required.  Five years experience in archives, library, or
related work, preferably with managerial or administrative experience.
Current knowledge of library/archives information retrieval practices and
procedures, especially in the areas of manual and on-line information
retrieval, reference sources and services, and electronic access to
information.  Understanding of diverse research methodologies. Knowledge of
material culture collections preferred.  Commitment to customer service.
Ability to work with a diverse clientele  Experience with institutional or
corporate records strongly preferred. Must communicate effectively with
staff and researchers orally, one-to-one and in groups; must write clearly,
concisely, and accurately.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
Must be proficient with Word and familiar with Access (or similar
products). Must be able to handle sensitive research requests and maintain
confidentiality.  Self-starter and self-directed, but able to work in a
team environment.  Able to handle multiple assignments concurrently, with
aplomb.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Excellent
interpersonal skills. Ability to set and continually readjust priorities.
Strong familiarity with intellectual property issues preferred.
