Re: Archive recruiters/Job hunting

Just 2 cents here--maybe 1.5 or 3--I got the impression that Lisa was
talking about the kind of interim between archival jobs that I also
experienced in Sillycom Valley. I worked for a "dot.com" for a year in
between library/archives jobs. I have an MLIS and trained and worked as an
archivist, but the dot.com paid well and I learned a lot more than I ever
wanted to know about computers, software, etc. (I convinced the dot.com to
start an archives and made them frame their founding T-shirt (autographed
by founders) using conservation techniques.) Once an archivist, always an
archivist, even at a dot.com.

Speaking from the other side of the border, and being somewhat familiar
with the profession in some states, there continues to be a variety of
backgrounds for many of our colleagues.

Lisa's posting was I believe a reasonable one, and perhaps is even related
to "the protection of (the/my/your) profession." If recruiters don't have
a standard for qualified archivists, then dot.commers, social scientists,
history buffs and whoever else thinks themselves to be archivists will be
recruited.

Lisa's background may or may not be related to the archival world...but as
anyone who has managed an archival institution/project/grant knows, HR
concerns are alive and well and living in Archivesville.

So if we all want to watch for specialized training, backgrounds,
education, skills and so on, it looks to me like we are discussing
certification....BUT...until the market (i.e. employers) make the C.A.
designation a requirement, there will continue to be a variety of
backgrounds for individuals entering the archival profession.

And Gunnar, if you are concerned about my qualifications I would be pleased
to give them to you off-list.

This is just my .02's worth (Cdn...about .0122 U.S.).

Cheers!

Mark
