Historical Records Forum: Press Advisory

Historical Records Forum: Documenting Underdocumented Populations &
Communities

The Fifth Annual Community Forum on Historical Records, Documenting
Underdocumented Populations & Communities, will meet on Friday, June 7, 2002
at Bridgewater State College, Bridgewater. Secretary of the Commonwealth
William Francis Galvin and the Massachusetts Historical Records Advisory
Board are co-sponsors of the forum.

Documenting Underdocumented Populations & Communities will build upon the
strategies, activities, and accomplishments of the previous four forums:
Advocating Massachusetts History, Building Alliances, Documenting Our
Heritage and Telling Our Stories.

These forums identified the documentation that currently exists. Equally
important, they revealed the areas of documentation that are lacking or
underrepresented. There is a need for dialogue among scholars, archivists,
historians, genealogists, librarians, educators and citizens to ensure
identification, preservation and access to Massachusetts' unique heritage.

Accordingly, Documenting Underdocumented Populations & Communities will
present speakers, demonstrations, and workshops to promote a more complete
documentation of Massachusetts' history and citizenry. Session participants
represent Arab Americans, Gypsies, Armenians, Cape Verdeans, Portuguese,
Brazilians, Chinese, Southeast Asians, Latinos, African Americans,
Somalians, Native Americans, Swedes and Lithuanians. Session topics include:
documentation planning methodology; preservation; U.S. Census population
categories; users of records; funding for documentation projects;
immigration & refugees; labor unions; and documentation utilizing
photographs & oral histories.

Forum participants will have ample opportunities to meet representatives of
the organizations cosponsoring the forum, as well as their colleagues and
neighbors in the historical records community. We look forward to seeing you
at the Fifth Annual Community Forum on Historical Records where together we
will explore the many different ways of presenting and preserving the
collective memory of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and its people.
