New Position at Connecticut State Library



Local Government Records Archivist

The Connecticut State Library is pleased to announce the availability
of a new full-time position with the State Archives.  This permanent
position is funded under Public Act 00-146 An Act Concerning Real Estate
Filings and the Preservation of Historic Documents.  Working with the
State Archivist and Public Records Administrator, the archivist will
plan new projects tp preserve and make records more available.  In
addition, the archivist will be responsible for processing a large
collection of Connecticut local government records and creating finding
aids, guides, and automated access products.  The archivist will also
consult with town clerks from throughout the state to determine the
location and condition of their archival records and make
recommendations to the town for their preservation.  The State Archives
is looking for a dedicated self-starter who can focus on processing
detail and can also interact effectively with local government
officials.  This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate
to be in at the ground level of a new initiative, to gain professional
experience, and work with a skilled team of experienced professions in a
collegial, participatory environment.  The archivist will report to the
State Archivist.

The State Library is the chief research repository in Connecticut for
those studying the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of
state government and it provides services to state and local
governments, citizens of Connecticut, and researchers from other states
and countries.  The project, in addition to improving access to an
important body of governmental records, will provide the model for the
preservation of local records in this and other states.

Responsibilities
Processing local government records in the State Archives; preparing
finding aids in electronic and hard copy formats; making recommendations
for improved preservation and access; evaluating and making
appraisal/accessioning recommendations; and providing local officials
with technical and advisory services.  Person will make oral
presentations and assist in preparing records retention schedules.

Qualifications
A graduate degree in American History, Archival Administration, and/or
Library Science with a significant archival curriculum or other
equivalent degree and one (1) year of full-time, post-graduate
professional work.  Considerable knowledge of the principles and
practices of archival science and records management and knowledge of
archival preservation.  Ability to analyze and solve problems,
interpersonal skills, oral/written skills, and ability to create and use
databases required.

Preferred
Experience in processing archival records and preparing finding aids.
Experience in using MS Office products and databases.  Experience in
working with local government archival records and in providing field
services desired.  Familiarity with Connecticut laws and regulations
governing the management of local government records desirable.

Starting Salary
$48,435 per year with fringe benefits.
