MARY AND JOHN GRAY LIBRARY, LAMAR UNIVERSITY, BEAUMONT, TEXAS

Lamar University invites applications for the position of University
Archivist.  Position supervises both the library?s Archives and the Special
Collections Department, including the papers of retired United States
Congressman Jack Brooks.   Reports to Library Director.  This is a new
position in the library and will afford the successful candidate the
exciting opportunity of developing a new program and putting his or her
stamp on a traditionally underutilized area of the library.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Plans and organizes on-going work and new
initiatives, establishes procedures, and determines priorities for Archives
and the Special Collections Department.  Coordinates the work of Archives
and the Special Collections Department with other library departments and
university entities.  Provides reference assistance for archival and
special collections materials as needed.  Investigates possible sources of
funding for the digitization of archival and special collections
materials.  Arranges staffing of Archives and the Special Collections
Department for eight hours per day, Monday through Friday, and other hours
by appointment.  Supervises one staff person and one student worker.

Required Qualifications:  ALA-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS)
and archival coursework; or Master of Archival Studies (MAS); or masters
degree in other appropriate field and the Certificate of Archival Studies
(CAS).  Knowledge of current archival and special collections trends and
procedures.  Ability to apply knowledge of traditional and electronic
library resources.  Ability to establish and maintain strong working
relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visiting researchers.
Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.  Strong
customer service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:  Second masters degree in appropriate field.  Two
years experience in a library archive or special collections area.

Salary and Benefits:  Tenure track, 12-month contract with faculty status
and rank commensurate with experience.  Salary range of $32,000-36,000,
depending on qualifications.  Choice of state retirement plan (TRS) or
optional retirement plan (ORP).  Choice of medical and dental plans and
other insurance coverage.  No state or local income tax.

Library Information:  The Library is staffed by 13 librarians and 33
support staff positions.  The collection includes more than 992,000 volumes
and volume equivalents, plus subscriptions to both print publications and
electronic databases.  The annual library budget is $3 million.  Visit the
